Terms of Use
Effective Date: March 7, 2026 Last Updated: March 7, 2026
Welcome to nav0. These Terms of Use ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("User," "you," or "your") and the nav0 Contributors ("nav0," "we," "us," or "our") governing your use of the nav0 Browser software application and the nav0 website located at https://nav0.org (collectively, the "Service").
By downloading, installing, or using the nav0 Browser, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not download, install, or use nav0.
1. About nav0
nav0 is a free, open-source, minimal, privacy-focused web browser. nav0 is built on the Chromium engine via the Electron framework. nav0 is designed with a singular purpose: to let you browse the web without being tracked, profiled, or monetized. nav0 collects zero telemetry, requires no user accounts, and stores all data locally on your device.
nav0 is distributed under the MIT License. These Terms supplement the MIT License and address your rights and obligations when using the nav0 Browser and the nav0 website.
2. License Grant
2.1 Open-Source License
nav0 is released under the MIT License. Subject to the conditions of the MIT License, you are granted a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of nav0, and to permit persons to whom nav0 is furnished to do so.
2.2 Scope of These Terms
While the MIT License governs the source code itself, these Terms govern your use of the compiled nav0 Browser application, the nav0 website, and any associated services, documentation, and content provided by the nav0 project.
2.3 No Additional Restrictions
We do not impose restrictions beyond what is stated in these Terms and the MIT License. You are free to fork, modify, and redistribute nav0 in accordance with the MIT License.
3. Eligibility
You may use nav0 if you are at least 13 years of age (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction to consent to using software). If you are under 18, you represent that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf.
4. User Conduct
When using nav0, you agree to:
- Comply with applicable laws. You will not use nav0 for any activity that violates local, national, or international law.
- Respect others. You will not use nav0 to harass, threaten, or harm others, or to distribute illegal, defamatory, or obscene content.
- Not misrepresent nav0. You will not distribute modified versions of nav0 under the nav0 name or branding without prior written consent, except as permitted by the MIT License.
- Not reverse engineer protections. While nav0 is open source and you are free to study the code, you agree not to use nav0 to circumvent security measures, digital rights management, or access controls on third-party services in violation of applicable law.
5. Privacy and Data
5.1 Zero Data Collection
nav0 does not collect, transmit, store, or process any user data on external servers. There is no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting to us, and no user accounts. Our full Privacy Policy provides additional detail.
5.2 Local Data
All browsing data — including bookmarks, history, downloads, and settings — is stored locally on your device. nav0 does not have access to this data. You are solely responsible for the security and backup of your local data.
5.3 Third-Party Websites
When you use nav0 to visit websites, those websites may collect data about you according to their own privacy policies. nav0 provides built-in protections such as tracker blocking, third-party cookie blocking, HTTPS auto-upgrade, and fingerprint protection, but we cannot control the behavior of third-party websites. You acknowledge that your interactions with third-party websites are governed by their respective terms and privacy policies, not ours.
5.4 Search Engines
nav0 allows you to choose your default search engine. When you perform a search, your query is sent directly to the search engine you have selected. nav0 does not intercept, log, or modify your search queries. The search engine's own terms and privacy policies apply.
5.5 Extensions
nav0 supports browser extensions. Third-party extensions operate under their own terms and privacy policies. We recommend reviewing extension permissions carefully before installation. nav0 is not responsible for data collection, security vulnerabilities, or other issues caused by third-party extensions.
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 nav0 Source Code
The nav0 source code is licensed under the MIT License and is available at https://github.com/nav0-org/nav0-browser. Your rights to the source code are governed by the MIT License.
6.2 nav0 Branding
The nav0 name, logo, and associated branding are the property of the nav0 project. While you are free to fork and modify the nav0 source code under the MIT License, you may not use the nav0 name, logo, or branding in a way that suggests endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship without prior written permission from the nav0 project maintainers.
6.3 Third-Party Components
nav0 incorporates third-party open-source components, each governed by their respective licenses. A list of these components and their licenses is available in the project repository. Chromium, Electron, and other embedded technologies retain their respective copyrights and license terms.
6.4 Website Content
All content on the nav0 website — including documentation, blog posts, guides, and design elements — is the property of the nav0 Contributors unless otherwise stated. You may reference and link to our website content freely. Reproduction of substantial portions of the website content requires attribution.
7. Disclaimer of Warranties
7.1 "As Is" Provision
nav0 IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the nav0 Contributors disclaim all warranties, including but not limited to:
- Merchantability — no guarantee that nav0 is fit for commercial use.
- Fitness for a particular purpose — no guarantee that nav0 will meet your specific requirements.
- Non-infringement — no guarantee that nav0 does not infringe third-party rights.
- Accuracy or reliability — no guarantee that nav0 will operate without errors, interruptions, or defects.
- Security — no guarantee that nav0 is free from vulnerabilities, although we make reasonable efforts to maintain security.
7.2 No Guarantee of Availability
We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability of the nav0 website, download servers, or any associated services. These may be taken offline for maintenance, updates, or at our discretion.
7.3 Your Responsibility
You are solely responsible for determining whether nav0 is suitable for your needs and for any consequences of using nav0 on your system. We recommend keeping nav0 updated for the latest security patches.
8. Limitation of Liability
8.1 No Liability for Damages
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE NAV0 CONTRIBUTORS, MAINTAINERS, OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE FOR ANY:
- Direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages;
- Loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses;
- Damages resulting from your use or inability to use nav0;
- Damages resulting from unauthorized access to or alteration of your data;
- Damages resulting from the conduct of any third party on or related to the Service;
- Any other damages arising out of or in connection with these Terms or the use of nav0,
WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STATUTE, OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
8.2 Maximum Liability
In jurisdictions that do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability for consequential or incidental damages, our liability shall be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the nav0 Contributors, maintainers, and affiliates from and against any and all claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorney fees) arising from:
- Your use of nav0;
- Your violation of these Terms;
- Your violation of any third-party right, including intellectual property, privacy, or proprietary rights;
- Any content you access, download, or distribute through nav0.
10. Updates and Modifications
10.1 Software Updates
nav0 does not auto-update without your knowledge. You may choose to download and install updates at your discretion. We strongly recommend keeping nav0 updated to benefit from security fixes and improvements.
10.2 Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do:
- The updated Terms will be posted on the nav0 website at https://nav0.org/terms-of-use.
- The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page will be revised.
- For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users through release notes, the nav0 website, or the project repository.
Your continued use of nav0 after changes to these Terms constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, you must stop using nav0.
11. Termination
11.1 Your Right to Terminate
You may stop using nav0 at any time by uninstalling it. No notice to us is required. Since we do not collect any data, there is no account to delete or data to request.
11.2 Our Right to Terminate
We reserve the right to discontinue the nav0 project, website, or any associated services at any time without notice. Because nav0 is open source, the source code will remain available under the MIT License even if the project is discontinued, and the community may continue development through forks.
11.3 Survival
Sections 6 (Intellectual Property), 7 (Disclaimer of Warranties), 8 (Limitation of Liability), 9 (Indemnification), and 13 (Governing Law) shall survive any termination of these Terms.
12. Open-Source Community
12.1 Contributions
If you contribute code, documentation, or other materials to the nav0 project, your contributions are governed by the MIT License unless otherwise agreed in writing. By submitting a contribution, you represent that you have the right to license your contribution under the MIT License.
12.2 Community Guidelines
Participation in the nav0 community — including GitHub issues, pull requests, discussions, and any other project channels — is subject to our Contributing Guidelines and any applicable code of conduct. We reserve the right to moderate community spaces and remove content or participants that violate community standards.
12.3 No Employment or Partnership
Your use of or contribution to nav0 does not create an employment, agency, partnership, or joint venture relationship between you and the nav0 Contributors.
13. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
13.1 Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable open-source software norms and, to the extent required, the laws of the jurisdiction in which the primary project maintainer resides, without regard to conflict of law principles.
13.2 Dispute Resolution
Any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms shall first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If negotiation fails, disputes may be resolved through binding arbitration or in a court of competent jurisdiction, as determined by applicable law.
13.3 Class Action Waiver
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you agree that any dispute resolution proceedings will be conducted on an individual basis and not as part of a class, consolidated, or representative action.
14. Miscellaneous
14.1 Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with the MIT License and the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and the nav0 Contributors regarding the use of nav0 and supersede any prior agreements.
14.2 Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect.
14.3 Waiver
Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of that right or provision. Any waiver must be in writing and signed by the nav0 project maintainers.
14.4 Assignment
You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations without restriction.
14.5 Notices
Any notices to the nav0 project should be directed through the GitHub repository at https://github.com/nav0-org/nav0-browser.
14.6 Force Majeure
The nav0 Contributors shall not be liable for any failure or delay in performance due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to natural disasters, acts of government, internet outages, or other force majeure events.
