Nav0 vs Firefox: When "Good Enough" Privacy Isn't Good Enough

This one is harder to write.
Firefox is the browser we respect most. Mozilla has been fighting for the open web since before most people knew the web needed fighting for. Firefox is genuinely good software built by people who genuinely care about privacy. If you're using Chrome and you switch to Firefox, you've made a meaningful improvement.
But "better than Chrome" is a low bar. And when you look closely at what Firefox actually does on a fresh install — the telemetry it sends, the accounts it pushes, the sponsored content it displays, the features it keeps adding — there's a gap between Firefox's principles and its defaults.
Nav0 exists in that gap.
Telemetry: On by Default
Install Firefox. Open it for the first time. Without changing a single setting, Firefox will begin sending data to Mozilla.
Firefox's default telemetry includes:
- Usage statistics. How long you use the browser, which features you interact with, how many tabs you open, which settings you change.
- Technical data. Your operating system, hardware configuration, installed add-ons, crash reports, memory usage.
- Interaction data. Clicks on Firefox UI elements, toolbar customization, new tab page interactions.
- Location data. Your IP-based location is used for default search engine selection and "relevant content" delivery.
Mozilla calls this "telemetry" and says it helps them improve Firefox. They're probably right. But the data still leaves your device. It still goes to Mozilla's servers. It still gets processed, stored, and analyzed.
You can opt out. Mozilla makes that possible, and they deserve credit for it. But the default is opt-in. And most users never change defaults. A study by Microsoft found that fewer than 5% of users modify default settings in software. That means the vast majority of Firefox users are sending telemetry to Mozilla without knowing it.
Nav0's approach: there is no telemetry to opt out of. No setting to find. No default to change. The code to collect and transmit usage data simply doesn't exist. You can verify this yourself — the source is open and the codebase is small enough to actually audit.
The New Tab Page: Ads in Disguise
Open a new tab in Firefox. What do you see?
- Sponsored shortcuts. Tiles linking to companies that paid Mozilla to be there. These are advertisements placed in the most-viewed page of your browser.
- Pocket recommendations. Articles selected by Pocket's algorithm, designed to drive engagement with Mozilla's content platform.
- Sponsored Pocket stories. Paid content placements mixed in with the "recommended" articles.
- A search bar. Pre-configured to use Google, because Google pays Mozilla roughly $450 million per year for that default placement.
This is the first thing you see every time you open a new tab. In a browser that markets itself as privacy-focused, the default new tab page is a monetization surface.
You can disable all of this. You can turn off sponsored shortcuts, Pocket stories, and sponsored content individually through settings. But again — the default is on. And the reason the default is on is because these features generate revenue.
Nav0's new tab page is blank. No sponsored tiles. No algorithmic recommendations. No paid placements. No search bar pre-configured to the highest bidder. Just a clean page ready for you to navigate wherever you want to go.
Mozilla Accounts: The Sign-In Pressure
Firefox increasingly nudges users to create a Mozilla account. The account unlocks:
- Bookmark sync across devices
- History sync
- Password sync
- Tab sync
- Extension sync
These are genuinely useful features. But each one requires your data to leave your device and live on Mozilla's servers. Your bookmarks — a detailed map of your interests and habits — get uploaded to the cloud. Your browsing history gets synced. Your saved passwords get stored on infrastructure you don't control.
Mozilla encrypts this data end-to-end. They've been transparent about their encryption implementation. This is better than Chrome's approach by a significant margin. But encrypted data on someone else's server is still data on someone else's server. It's subject to their infrastructure security, their employee access controls, their government compliance obligations, and their future business decisions.
More fundamentally, a Mozilla account is a persistent identifier. It links your browsing across devices and sessions to a single identity. We've written about why browsers want you to sign in — accounts turn anonymous browsing sessions into identified user profiles, even when the provider has good intentions.
Nav0 has no accounts. No sign-in. No sync. Your bookmarks, history, and settings live on your device and nowhere else. This means you can't sync across devices — that's a real limitation we don't pretend otherwise about. But it also means there's no persistent identifier, no cloud storage of your browsing data, and no nudging you toward creating a profile.
Feature Creep: Firefox's Growing Footprint
Firefox was once the lean alternative to Internet Explorer. Over the years, it has grown:
- Pocket — A "read later" service Mozilla acquired in 2017 and integrated into Firefox. It has its own account system, its own recommendation algorithm, and its own monetization through sponsored content.
- Firefox Monitor — A data breach notification service tied to your Mozilla account.
- Firefox Relay — An email masking service. Useful, but not a browser feature.
- Mozilla VPN — A paid VPN service promoted within Firefox. We've covered why browser VPNs are problematic.
- Firefox View — A tab management dashboard showing recent tabs, recently closed tabs, and synced tabs from other devices.
- Firefox Suggest — "Contextual suggestions" in the address bar, including sponsored suggestions from advertising partners.
- AI features — Mozilla has been experimenting with AI-powered features including chatbot integrations and content recommendations.
- Picture-in-Picture — A video pop-out player.
- PDF editor — Annotation tools for PDFs.
- Translation — Built-in page translation.
Some of these are genuinely useful. Translation and PDF viewing are reasonable browser features. But the cumulative effect is a browser that gets heavier with every release. Each feature adds code, increases memory usage, expands the attack surface, and requires maintenance.
Nav0 includes the features necessary for browsing: tabs, bookmarks, history, downloads, a reader mode, a PDF viewer, an ad blocker, and find-in-page. That's the complete list. We don't add features to justify release cycles or to create new monetization surfaces. The feature list is intentionally short and intentionally stable.
The Google Revenue Dependency
This is the elephant in Mozilla's room.
Mozilla Corporation's largest source of revenue is its search engine deal with Google. Google pays Mozilla to make Google Search the default in Firefox. This deal has historically accounted for over 80% of Mozilla's revenue — roughly $450-500 million per year.
This creates a dependency that's difficult to overstate. Mozilla — the organization that positions itself as the counterweight to Google's dominance — is financially dependent on Google. Mozilla's ability to pay its staff, maintain Firefox, and fund its mission depends on the continued generosity of the company it's supposed to be competing against.
This has tangible effects:
- Google is the default search engine. Despite Google's well-documented data collection practices, Firefox ships with Google as the default search engine on most platforms. Every search you make from Firefox's address bar goes to Google, unless you change it.
- Strategic independence is constrained. Mozilla can advocate for privacy and open web standards, but it can't push so hard that Google pulls the deal. The relationship creates a ceiling on how aggressively Mozilla can challenge Google's business practices.
- Revenue pressure shapes product decisions. Features like Firefox Suggest (which includes sponsored suggestions) and new tab page sponsored content exist because Mozilla needs to diversify revenue beyond the Google deal. The browser becomes a monetization surface out of financial necessity.
Nav0 has no search engine deals. No revenue dependencies. No corporate relationships that constrain product decisions. When you search from nav0's address bar, you use whatever search engine you've configured — with no financial incentive behind the default.
The about:config Argument
Firefox power users often argue that Firefox can be made fully private. And they're right. Open about:config and you can disable telemetry, turn off Pocket, remove sponsored content, block Firefox Suggest, disable Safe Browsing phone-home, prevent prefetching, and lock down dozens of other settings.
There are entire websites and GitHub repositories dedicated to Firefox hardening — lists of hundreds of about:config preferences to toggle for maximum privacy. Projects like arkenfox/user.js maintain comprehensive privacy configurations.
This proves the point rather than refuting it.
If you need to change 200 settings to make your browser private, your browser is not private. It's configurable. There's a meaningful difference. A browser that's private by default respects every user. A browser that's private after extensive configuration respects only the technically sophisticated users who know the right toggles.
And those configurations break after updates. Firefox changes behavior between versions. Settings get deprecated, renamed, or overridden by new features. Maintaining a hardened Firefox configuration is an ongoing project, not a one-time setup.
Nav0 is private by default. Not because we added a "privacy mode" or a list of toggles. Because there's nothing to toggle. The code that would collect telemetry doesn't exist. The sponsored content system doesn't exist. The account infrastructure doesn't exist. Privacy isn't a configuration — it's the architecture.
The Engine Question
Let's address the technical elephant in the room: rendering engines.
Firefox uses Gecko, Mozilla's own engine. Nav0 uses Chromium via Electron. This is a legitimate and important distinction.
The case for Gecko: The web needs engine diversity. If every browser runs on Chromium, Google effectively controls web standards. Gecko's existence is a check on that power. By using Firefox, you're supporting an independent rendering engine, and that matters for the health of the web.
The case for Chromium: Web compatibility. Chromium-based browsers render pages exactly as the majority of the web's developers test them. Gecko is excellent, but it occasionally renders sites differently, and some web applications are only tested against Chromium.
We're honest about this tradeoff. Nav0's use of Chromium means we contribute to the Chromium monoculture problem. We don't pretend otherwise. If you choose Firefox specifically to support engine diversity, that's a principled decision we respect.
But engine choice and privacy are separate concerns. You can support Gecko and still acknowledge that Firefox's defaults include telemetry, sponsored content, and account nudging. Engine diversity is about the health of the web. Privacy is about the relationship between you and your browser. Nav0 makes a different engine choice but a stricter privacy choice.
What You Give Up
Choosing nav0 over Firefox means giving up:
- Cross-device sync. Firefox Sync, despite requiring an account, is well-implemented and genuinely useful. Nav0 has nothing comparable.
- The extensions ecosystem. Firefox has a mature, well-curated extensions ecosystem with strong APIs. Nav0 doesn't support extensions.
- Mobile browsing. Firefox is available on iOS and Android. Nav0 is desktop-only.
- Engine diversity. By using nav0 instead of Firefox, you're not supporting Gecko. This has real implications for the open web.
- Containers and tab isolation. Firefox's Multi-Account Containers are a genuinely innovative privacy feature that allows you to isolate browsing contexts. Nav0 doesn't have an equivalent.
- Mature developer tools. Firefox's DevTools are world-class. Nav0's are basic.
- Firefox's anti-tracking technology. Enhanced Tracking Protection, Total Cookie Protection, and fingerprinting protection in Firefox are industry-leading. Nav0's protections are simpler.
These are significant tradeoffs. Firefox is a more capable browser by almost every functional measure. If you need extensions, sync, mobile support, or sophisticated developer tools, Firefox is the better choice.
The question nav0 answers is different: what if you don't need all that? What if you just want a browser that loads pages, doesn't collect your data, and doesn't try to be anything more? What if "less" is actually what you want?
The Respect Paradox
Here's the uncomfortable truth: we recommend Firefox more than any other mainstream browser. If someone asks us "what should I use instead of Chrome?" and they need extensions, mobile support, or sync — the answer is Firefox. It's not close.
Mozilla does more for the open web than any other browser vendor. Their advocacy for web standards, their push for privacy legislation, their resistance to Google's dominance — these things matter, and they benefit everyone, including nav0 users.
But respect for an organization doesn't mean accepting its defaults uncritically. Firefox is the best mainstream browser for privacy. Nav0 is for people who think "mainstream" is the problem.
